Barnell Trammell was born on June 15, 1933 in Hogansville, Georgia to Leonard and Exie Phillips. She attended Hogansville Elementary and later Hogansville High School. At a young,beginning a lifelong journey of faith that would sustain her through every season of life. Her faith became even more precious when, at the age of 11 years old, she experienced the profound loss of her mother. Despite this early heartbreakl she carried herself with grace and resilience, leaning on her trust of God and the love of her family. As a young woman, Barnell worked as a domestic worker, known for her dedication and caring spirit. She remained close to her father until his passing in 1973.
Barnell met Gus Trammell of Grantville, Georgia, and the two began a loving courtshhip. Awaiting Gus's return from war, Barnell looked forward to the future they could build together. On July 3, 1955, she married Gus, the love of her life. Before movmg to Chicago, Barnell and Gus were blessed with two children, Janice, born in 1952, and Ricky, born in 1955, both in Hogansville. Seeking greater opportunities for thelf young
family, Barnell and Gus decided to move to Chicago, Illinois, to start a new chapter of their lives. Settling on the west side of Chicago, Barnell worked for Baby Ruth, Beldins, Caroline Emmons, ManorCare Health Services, and continued her early work as a domestic worker. A devoted wife and mother, she also joined her husband and brother-in-law as an entrepreneur, owning and operating Austin Furniture, where Barnell proudly served as secretary and bookkeeper, helping the business thrive. Her deep faith led her to become an active member of Sunrise Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, where she served on the usher board for over 50 years, greeting all who entered with a warm smile and open heart.
In 1973, Barnell and Gus moved to Broadview, Illinois, becoming one of the first Black families in the community. There, they opened Bellwood Furniture and continued their proud legacy of hard work and dedication. Barnell was preceded in death by her beloved siblings: Mary (Spencer) Thornton, Doris (John) Studivant, Gladys Phillips, Helen Bridges, Clyde (Chandler Ezzard), Berneice, Charlie Ben (Gertrude} Phillips Curtis (Ruby) Phillips, Lorenzo (Dell) Phillips, and Jessie-Roy Phillips.
On September 1, 2012, Barnell's devoted husband Gus departed this life. Through every loss, Barnell remained steadfast, serving as the loving matriarch of her family until she peacefully passed away at 9 p.m. on July 4, 2025. She lives behind cherished memories through her family.
