Bernice
Hawkins
August 7, 1923 – January 2, 2021
Bernice was born in Tiptonville, Tennessee on August 7, 1923 to the union of Bruce and Alice Hersey. Bernice attended grammar school in Tiptonville. She received her high school education in Dyersburg, Tennessee and in Meridian, Mississippi where she attended T.J. Harrison High School. In 1944, Bernice was united in Holy matrimony to Luscious Burrage in Chicago. This union was blessed with two daughters, Corita and Vivian (both whom preceded her in death). Luscious preceded Bernice in death in the year 1959. Bernice, in 1963, was united in Holy matrimony to Ben Hawkins, and was blessed with two children, Thelma (who preceded her in death), and Michael. With firm and unwavering faith, she confessed Christ and joined 1 st Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Piper at a young age. In 1980, she continued her journey with Christ and joined Douglas Park Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Thomas LaNier. Not only did Bernice faithfully serve on the Mothers Board, she also assisted with numerous church events. She served as president of the August Club, president of the Outreach Department, supervisor of Dinner Sales, director of D.P.B.C. Food Pantry, Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, participated in the Prison Ministry, and supervised the Clothing Ministry. Bernice was a faithful member of Bible Class, was the church telephone directory to many, and was the ultimate prayer warrior for the sick and the shut-in. Even at 97 years young, she received her greatest joy in serving Christ by supporting her church with prayers and tithes. Bernice's favorite pastimes included chewing gum, working word puzzles, trading and telling jokes, being the life of the party, flirting with younger men (especially health professionals, to the amused embarrassment of her son). She enjoyed being around her family and church friends, all of whom she cherished and loved immeasurably. Bernice leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memories the following: one son, Michael; six grandchildren - Rhodesian, Bendale, Joseph, Ronald (wife, Genelle), Theron, and Michael (Mike- Mike); eleven grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren, three great-great-great-grandchildren, two goddaughters (Sharon and Shirley), two godsons, (Rev. MacDonald and Anthony Pani), and last but certainly not least, her best friend, Mrs. Harris. Her son wishes to convey his immense gratitude to Rhodesia and her daughter, Kristina for the exceptional care they provided Bernice in her later years. As well, he wishes to acknowledge Bendale, Krystal, Leo, Anthony, and Sharon for their support.
