CALVIN LUTHER WASHINGTON SR. was born in Gainesville, Alabama on June 7, 1943 to Addie and Maude Washington. He was the third of seven children.
Calvin Sr. was proceeded in death by his parents, loving siblings, Booker T., Charlie, and Ruth Washington.
Calvin Sr. graduated from Sumter County Training School in Livingston, Alabama in 1961. He later moved to the Chicagoland area, where he remained until his death.
Calvin Sr. worked 45 years at Continental Freezers. During 15 of those years, he also worked part-time at Montgomery Wards to provide for his family. While working, he not only did his job well, but he mentored others who expressed a desire to navigate up the organizational chart. As a result of his exemplary leadership qualities and commitment to his craft, he served as the Union Steward for several years at Continental Freezers.
Calvin Sr. professed his faith in God at an early age. After his retirement, he rededicated his life to God and was baptized at Rock of Ages Baptist Church, under the pastorate of Reverend Marvin E. Wiley.
Calvin Sr. volunteered tirelessly at Rock of Ages Baptist Church. He sang in both the Mass and Men's choirs, and served on the Funeral Ministry. He religiously attended Noon Bible Classes, Evening Prayer Services, and Sunday 8:00 am and 11:00 am Worship Services, until his death.
Calvin Sr. transitioned on May 6, 2021. He leaves his sister Elma Robinson, his brothers, John, Gregory, and David (Eugenia). Additionally, Calvin Sr. leaves his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Calvin Sr. was a friend to many, hardworking, loyal and beloved by all who knew him. As John 14:1-6 says, "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house, are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also…..Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
Rest assured, our beloved Calvin Luther Washington Sr. is somewhere in heaven enjoying his mansion.
