A Life to Remember

Cozetta "Gigi" was born on May 7, 1935 to Reverend Samuel Wesley and Beatrice Gathing in DeSoto, Mississippi. Cozetta was a loving and devoted mother. She loved hosting extravagant gatherings and treating her family and friends to her fine Southern cooking and hospitality. She enjoyed filling her home with love, laughter, and good food. Cozetta was a business owner of a vintage resale store and moving company for more than ten years. She retired from her business to devote herself full time to care for her ailing mother, Beatrice. After the death of her mother, Cozetta opened and operated an in-home day care which ran for 18 years. Cozetta was active in her church and senior community – driving herself to and from social gatherings, dances, picnics, and dinner engagements. She also never missed an episode of The Young & the Restless .

Cozetta was called home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, February 1, 2021. Preceded in death are her parents, Reverend Samuel Wesley and Beatrice; her brothers, Samuel Jr., Alfred, Lloyd; and sisters, Cynthia, Ruth, Christine, Iola, and Alberta; and son Larry Nathaniel. Cozetta leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her three children, Gwendolyn Shawlee of Hanover Park, Illinois, Michael (Irma) Shaw of Moline, Illinois and Phoebe (Scott) Peterson of Flossmoor, Illinois; 9 grandchildren, Cedric, Micaela (Patrick), Lady (Martin), Necole, Cozetta, Michael II (Lisa), Caleb, Zachary, and Beatrice Lexie; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Roberta of St. Louis, Missouri, Betty Jo of Crest Hill, Illinois, and Laura Mae of St. Louis, Missouri; two brother, Obadiah of Kankakee, Illinois and James (Marsha) of Westchester, Illinois; dear and caring nieces and nephews; and thoughtful relatives and friends.
