Donald S. Alsip, 84, passed away after battling Parkinson's Disease on September 8, 2022. Beloved husband of 62 years to Toyo "Aiko" (Tomori). Devoted father of Steven, Michael (Julie) and Debra (Richard) Kopsky; fond grandfather of Timothy (Desiree) Alsip, Cory (Katherine) Alsip, Kelsey (Randy) Domingue, Kamryn (Matthew) Lulay, Anna Kopsky, Donna Ruiz, Jordan Kopsky, Zachary Alsip, Daniel Kopsky, Ryan Alsip, Kyle Alsip and Nathaniel Alsip and 5 great-grandchildren; dear brother of Mary Lou (the late Phillip) Martin and Nancy (William) Gewargis. Fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.
He was born to William and Catherine Alsip (Fox) on July 14, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up on the streets of Chicago in the Little Italy/Tri-Taylor area. He was known to his childhood friends as "Duckie." Don joined the United States Air Force in 1957 and served until 1962. He met his loving wife Aiko while based on Okinawa, Japan.
Don worked at the US Naval Plant in Forest Park, Illinois and subsequently the US Railroad Retirement Board for many years until he retired in June 1995. He was an avid reader, loved to fish and was a walking encyclopedia of historical facts. He loved crossword puzzles and would complete the daily newspaper puzzle every day until his illness no longer allowed him to do so. He was extremely proud of his Irish, Ukrainian and Canadian heritage. He enjoyed many trips to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to visit cousins, aunts and uncles.
He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings William, Jr. (the late Grace), Lucille (the late Nicholas) Zambole, Patricia (the late Harry) Smith and Gary.
Visitation Tuesday, September 13, 2022 from 3 pm to 8 pm at Hursen Funeral Home & Crematory, SW corner of Roosevelt & Mannheim Roads, Hillside/Westchester, Illinois 60162.
Prayers Wednesday 9:00 a.m. from Hursen Funeral Home to St. Domitilla Church,4940 Washington Street Hillside, Illinois 60162. Mass 10:00 a.m.
