He proudly served in the US Navy during WWII in the South Pacific while aboard the USS Roi (CVE-103) escort aircraft carrier.  He was certified to operate seven engines used by several aircraft carrier planes including the F4U Vought Corsair,  F6F Grumman Hellcat, SB2C Curtis Helldiver, F8F Grumman Bearcat, and the TBM Grumman Avenger. Within a few years of honorable discharge in 1946, he met the love of his life Evelyn and together they grew into a family of seven. The family enjoyed many month-long cross-country summer car trips together.  George enjoyed 63 years of marriage before Evy passed away in 2014. After retiring from the USPS, he returned to Greektown to start a dry cleaning business.  He later returned to mail delivery service as an Airborne Express driver.  After his second retirement, he expanded his love of travel to Europe.  He was proud of his Italian heritage and traveled several times to Castelverrino, a hilltop town in the Abruzzo region south of Rome.  He would stay with his cousins there while also bringing several of his children to Italy to meet their second and third generation cousins.  Among his most proud moments was traveling to our nation's Capital on the Honor Flight Chicago with other WWII vets.  He was also honored in 2014 as the Grand Marshall for the Village of Hillside's 12th Annual Veterans Day Parade.  A private family visitation and mass has already been held. Online condolences can be directed on Hursen website.  Due to the Covid crisis, a memorial service may take place in the future. For info, 800-562-0082.
