Jessie
Foster
April 7, 2022
Jessie Teen Foster (Spurlin) was born May 4th, 1935 in Lexington
Mississippi to the union of Olivia and Owen Spurlin. She was the
youngest of six children: *Anderson Spurlin (*Modell); *Owen Spurlin
(Lena); *Amelda Thomas (*Lee); Mildred Leonard (*Charles); and
*Amanda Watkins (*William).
She was raised in a Christian home and knew the Lord at an early age.
As the youngest child, she was affectionally known as 'Bae-Doll' a
nickname that stayed with her throughout her life. Jessie began her
formal education in Lexington Mississippi in a small one room
schoolhouse. Her family relocated to Chicago when she was a teenager
where she continued her education at Farragut High School where she
was voted best dressed in her senior year.
While attending Secretarial College in Chicago she met Curtis Foster
who worked with her brother Anderson (Uncle BB). In July of 1954,
after a whirlwind courtship, they were united in marriage and from
this union seven beautiful children were born. Early in the marriage,
Jessie spent her time as a devoted wife, mother, and daughter. She
was active in the Girl Scouts, PTA, and the chairman of the West End
Block Club in Chicago. She was a dedicated mother who made sure her
children had access to everything available to them. As her children
grew older, Jessie started working for a Chicago Public School across
the street from her home. In 1971 while working for Tilton Elementary
School, the latest edition to the Foster family was born. In addition to
being a mainstay in her children's lives, she was also an integral part of
the caregiving of her mother during the last years of her mother's life.
In the 1980s Jessie and Curtis embarked on a new journey as
entrepreneurs. Foster and Foster Construction landed multiple
contracts with included HUD, ComEd, and the city of Chicago. At
that time she attended Triton College for computer programming
which helped with the expansion of the business. After the death of
Curtis in 1993, Jessie retired so she would be able to enjoy time with
her family. She was a proud and loving grandmother who was always
there for them. Jessie ensured the grandchildren had a fulfilling and
loving childhood.
Jessie also had a taste for adventure. She travelled extensively,
internationally and domestically with her daughters and
grandchildren. Her curiosity and adventurous spirit made her ready
for anything from parasailing in Hawaii to Segwaying in downtown
Chicago while her devoted family watched with bated breath. She
traveled to places like Germany, Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Belize
and most recently traveled back to Venice.
Jessie made her transition peacefully at home on April 7th, 2022, and
leaves to cherish her memories her sister: Mildred Leonard
(*Charles); seven children: *Andre Foster (Barbara), Grace Foster,
Valerie Deere (Charles), Donna Foster, Dorrie Foster, Olivia Foster,
Devon Toliver (Steven); eleven grandchildren: Andre Foster, Kristen
Clower (Michael), Alicia Denton (Arien), Jennifer Davis, Valerie
Donoso (Ismael), Curtis Foster (Linnea), Raja Zahid (Courtney),
Baleace Ashley Foster, Joshua Toliver, Elijah Toliver, and Caleb
Toliver. Also cherishing her memory are her eleven greatgrandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and loving friends.
