Obituary

Kenneth Arthur Horn, affectionately known as Ken, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025 in Sarasota, FL. He was born on September 6, 1943. He was the first of three children born to the late Arthur and Margaret (Dockter) Horn of Cicero, IL. Shortly after his birth he was baptized in his parents' home by the Pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, Oak Park, IL. He had deep faith and a lifelong commitment to God.

Kens legacy will be carried on by his loving wife Diane (Pokorny) Horn, his beautiful twin daughters Crystal (Katrina), Colleen (Declan), and his precious grandchildren, Sigrid, Lochlann, Stellan, and August. As a loving big brother, he will be missed by his siblings Arthur (Patty) Horn and Christine (late Bill) Lee. Ken will also be missed by many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.

Ken graduated from Proviso West High School, Hillside, IL, in 1962, where he took part in basketball. His artistic talents led him to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where, in 1967, he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with academic studies completed through the University of Chicago. He was a summer Artist in Residency at Ox-Box, Saugatuck, MI. He was an accomplished artist and a skilled furniture maker. Several of his paintings and furniture pieces are proximately displayed in their home. Ken never sold his artwork. On occasion he gave away his artwork to family members and friends. For several years, he participated in The School of the Art Institute of Chicago's annual BareWalls benefit where his paintings were auctioned in support of the BareWalls Scholarship Fund.

Shortly after his collage graduation, he enlisted in the US Army. Ken valued this service highly. He spent his entire tour of duty in Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he earned the rank of photo lab specialist. On January 11, 1969, while on leave he and Diane were married at Our Lady of Victory Church in Chicago, IL.

Following his army discharge, Ken earned a teaching certificate from the University of Illinois, Chicago, and a master's degree in interdisciplinary arts from Columbia College Chicago. He went on to teach art in several City of Chicago schools, at Howell Cheney technical high school Manchester, CT and at Marian University, Fond Du Lac, WI.

During their 55 years of Marriage Ken and Diane built a family and life filled with love and adventure. While they traveled around the world, Ken enjoyed photographing all of it. With visits to art museums and churches always top on their travel itinerary. The Louvre, which Ken visited many times, was one of his favorite places. With his talent for teaching and his extensive knowledge of all things' art, Ken enjoyed enlightening those around him about paintings and artists. Ken enjoyed sports and always rooted for the team of the cities where he lived. He was a huge soccer fan, enjoyed fly fishing and was an avid reader and numismatist. He served for many years as the Educational Chair on the St. Paul Lutheran Church Melrose Park, IL Church Council.

Ken's presence will be profoundly missed, but his memory will continue to be a beacon of warmth and joy for all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Your prayers over the last several years have been a true blessing. Please continue to pray for us as we grieve, give thanks and grow.

Funeral visitation will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025 from 10:00 am until time of service 11:00 am at First Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1124 S. Ashland Ave, Chicago 60607.  Burial Concordia Cemetery - Forest Park, IL
