Obituary

Kent Katayama passed away unexpectedly on October 25, leaving behind a legacy of immense warmth, profound selflessness, and the absolute worst dad jokes. Born to Satoro and Satsuki Katayama, Kent was a proud Japanese American and a loyal son of the North Side of Chicago who truly never met a stranger.

He was a die-hard Chicago sports fan through and through, cheering on the Cubs and the Bears, but his deepest devotion belonged to the Blackhawks. His loyalty went all the way back to the 1900s, where he could faithfully be found listening to the Hawks games on the radio. Beyond the world of sports, Kent was an avid Batman enthusiast who curated an extensive comic book collection. He was also a relentlessly loyal fan of White Hen coffee, and his family is fairly certain his daily patronage single-handedly kept the franchise in business for as long as it existed.

Above all, Kent was a man who lived to make life easier and happier for those around him. He was a phenomenal listener and an undisputed grill master who loved feeding people, always making sure anyone who crossed his path felt deeply welcomed and well-fed. He found his greatest joy simply in watching his kids enjoy life and in taking Kasey on long, leisurely drives. He was a deeply selfless caretaker who would routinely go out of his way to drive his loved ones wherever they needed to be—whether to save them the headache of finding parking or to ensure they didn't have to drive home exhausted after a long shift at work. He loved good food and was a comforting presence who always gave the very best hugs.

Kent is survived by a large and loving family, including his beloved wife, Sara; his three children, Crystal (Ian), Kasey, and Robert; and his grandchildren, Liam, Carter, and Ascher. He also leaves behind his sister, Naomi Bright, and her children: Tasia, James Jr. (wife, Kate, along with their kids, Olivia and James III), and Alexis.

He was a kind soul who left this earth far too soon and will be deeply missed by everyone whose life he touched. For all of those who loved him, this isn’t goodbye, but rather, until we meet again.

Visitation will be held on Friday November 6, 2026 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m and on Saturday from 3:00 p.m. until time of service 4:00 p.m. at Hursen Funeral Home & Crematory, SW corner of Roosevelt & Mannheim Roads in Hillside. Info: 800-562-0082
