Obituary

Ketty Badrinath, MD, 87, of River Forest, Illinois passed away peacefully at home surrounded by members of his family on Thursday, October 26, 2023.  He was born in Madras, India on August 31st, 1936.  He was the beloved son of Mr. K. Jagannatham Naidu and Ms. Krishnaveni.  He attended Madras Medical College in India and obtained a Medical Degree and eventually  immigrated to the United States in 1963, where he began an internship in St. Claire's Hospital in New York.  Thereafter, he relocated to the Chicagoland area where he began a residency in internal medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Upon completion of his residency, he joined the faculty at Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood, Illinois under the leadership of Dr. J.R. Tobin.  Later, he became the Chief of the Oncology/Hematology Department for many years at Loyola University Medical Center.  He also worked at the Hines VA Hospital in Maywood, Illinois.  He was a well respected and renowned physician who earned the respect of his colleagues, peers, medical students, and patients.  He worked tirelessly to ensure that his patients' suffering was minimized and that they had the best possible outcome.  He was profoundly passionate about the practice of medicine and was focused on the healing of his patients who loved him dearly.  He was honored numerous times by various medical societies, including as a faculty inductee into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society in 1974, and also received the Gold Apple Award in 1997 by the Loyola Stritch School of Medicine Alumni Association.  In later years, he became Professor Emeritus at the Loyola University Medical Center, and his most significant honor was being awarded with a permanent bust on Wall of Fame in that institution. The Wall of Fame of the Department of Medicine of the Stritch School of Medicine was established to recognize those individuals who have made outstanding long term contributions to the mission of the Department in the areas of clinical practice, teaching and research.  He was one of the original inductees.  He was also passionate about teaching and supporting medical students so they could help others.  He was humble, empathetic, compassionate, and a kind gentlemen who was always impeccable dressed.  He was a deep scholar who had a voracious appetite for reading medical journals and learning everything that he could about a wide range of topics.  He retired from the practice of medicine in 2006 after more than forty-five (45) years of service. He also enjoyed skiing, playing tennis, scuba diving, and traveling the world with his wife. He loved spending with his family, including his two (2) granddaughters. He will always be remembered for his wisdom and advice that he imparted to all who knew him.  He was generous with time and inspirational to all.

He is survived by five siblings, of which two live close by in the Chicagoland area, his beloved wife of fifty-seven (57) years, Dr. Shyamala Badrinath, MD, his two sons, V.K. Badrinath (Elizabeth), and the Honorable Vikram K. Badrinath, as well as his two beloved granddaughters Olivia and Josephine. Cherished brother of Mr. K. Dwaraknath, Dr. Ketty Janarthan, DPM, Ms. Amruth Havlad, Mr. Thiruvengadam (Prasanna), and Ms. Kalyani Vummadisingh (Murali).

A visitation service for all will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023 from 4pm-8pm at Hursen Funeral Home, 4001 Roosevelt Road, Hillside, IL 60162 (708) 547-8200, and a private funeral service for family will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2023. Internment to follow.  Donations may by made in his name to the Loyola Medical Center student scholarship fund called Ignatian Service Immersion, or to the American Cancer Society. All donations are greatly appreciated.
