Obituary

Malcolm Boyd McCurry passed away at 11:20pm on Monday, May 24 th , 2021 after complications resulting from a stroke. His wife Janean and father Joe were together with him during his final moments at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, IL.

Malcolm was born to Joe and Helen McCurry on December 25 th , 1968 at Englewood Hospital in Chicago, IL. He grew up with a little sister (Ashika) that he loved and adored. During his childhood he loved sports and at times played organized football and soccer, and in high school, he participated in the school marching band.

Malcolm graduated from Homewood-Flossmoor High School in 1986, and continued his education at the University of Iowa, majoring in computer science. Malcolm was a computer nerd. After working at various companies, including large tech corporations like Expedia, (where he managed Disney Hotel and Resort automated pricing), he most recently he worked at Collegis Education, and was also a night school teacher for computer technical training.

Malcolm was a huge sports fan, especially of Chicago teams – at least most of them (south side!). The Bears, White Sox, Bull and Blackhawks were at the top of his list. He also loved music of all kinds. Back in the day, Malcolm would frequently DJ at parties. Over the years, he developed quite a following for his karaoke talents, and when he worked as an Office Manager in furniture liquidation, he was often being recruited to become a member of a local band during his travels.

Malcolm married his true love, Janean Hargrave, on November 11, 2011. That date was of special significance to them. 11/11/11 was a lucky number, and perhaps just as importantly, it was a date he would not forget. Malcolm and Janean made their home in Bellwood, IL.

Malcolm leaves to mourn: his wife, Janean McCurry and his father, Joe McCurry. Preceding him in death was his mother, Helen McCurry (2008) and Ashika McCurry (2018). He will be fondly missed by his aunts Betty McCurry and Jimmie Ruth McCurry, from Georgia, his uncles Marlvin Curry (Dr. Ella Curry), from Texas, and David McCurry (Jean), from Georgia. There are also many cousins and other relatives who will treasure his memory.

In addition, Malcolm leaves a close-knit group of friends who called him brother. From grade school on, these friends became family and connected nearly every day, whether by phone, video, or text. This extended family shared their lives, to include weddings, birthdays, guys trips, football parties and so much more. Kevin, Nolan, Brian, Walter, and Nelson, along with their wives and children will deeply miss Malcolm, who became a friend, brother and uncle to each of them. There are not enough words to express all we want to say about Malcolm. His infectious laugh and that smile that lit up every room he entered will be carried in our hearts always. In honor of Malcolm, raise a glass - and light a cigar if you are so inclined - to celebrate one of the greatest humans we've ever known.
