Martha P.
Chavez
January 17, 2025
Martha P. Chavez, 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 17, 2025. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Rudy F. Chavez, Sr., and is survived by her two sons, Rudy Jr. and Michael; her dearest daughter-in-law, Maria; her loving grandchildren,Evita J. Chavez and Xavier Carlin; and her cherished great-granddaughter, Gia Marie.
Martha was born into a family of seven in Torreón, Mexico, on August 25, 1935. In search of a better life, Martha worked in a department store in a border town, where she catered to American tourists and quickly mastered English. In 1960, she moved to Chicago, where she met the love of her life, Rudy F. Chavez, Sr. After a short engagement, they entered into a lifelong marriage of 60 years.
After having two sons, Martha continued her education and worked as a teacher's aide at Gary School in Little Village for 30 years. Martha was also a community organizer, dedicated to making her neighborhood a better place for all. She and Rudy joined the First United Methodist Church of Chicago in 1964, where she served the Lord as a communion steward and was actively involved in church functions.
Some of her favorite hobbies included drawing, playing games, embroidery, gardening, and, most of all, doting on her cherished pets. Martha was actively enjoying her passion for travel when her husband, Rudy, suffered a massive stroke that left him paralyzed on his left side. True to her vows, Martha selflessly cared for him for 17 years until his passing at the age of 93.
Martha's greatest joy was her family, whom she cherished with unwavering love, always placing their happiness above all else. A generous and charitable spirit, she often opened her home to those in need. She lived a long and healthy life and passed away peacefully following a bout of pneumonia.
Martha was truly one of a kind and will be fondly remembered by all.
