Mary Ann
Lee
May 21, 2024
Mary Ann Lee passed away peacefully in her home on May 21, 2024. Mary Ann was a Berkeley resident for 72 years where she and her husband, the late Robert E. Lee, raised their 13 children, James (Phyllis), Missy (Sia) Hatami, Thomas (Angelicque), Janet (Rick) Howat, Suzie, Robert E. Jr. (Susan), Patrick (Suzy), Carolyn (Gus) Hasapis, Timothy (Megan), Joseph (Lisa), Raymond, Catherine (Scott) Glombicki, Gregory (Kristin); Cherished Grandmother of 32; Great-Grandmother of 12. Preceded by her twin Mary Jane Stodola, her sister Margaret Konn and her brother George Konn, and. Aunt and Great-Aunt of many.
Mary Ann was born in Naperville, Illinois, on August 1, 1929. She and her twin, Mary Jane, were always together: dressing alike, taking the train to work in Chicago, playing cards, and hanging out with friends. She had an older sister, Margaret, and an older brother, George. Her parents, Charles and Catherine Konn, lived their entire married life in Naperville.
Mary Ann moved to Berkeley after getting married in 1952. She moved from a town that she thought had everything to the small town of Berkeley, where her new husband had grown up. They settled into their home on Bohlander Avenue and started their family of thirteen children who all attended St. Domitilla School, where her husband, Bob, also graduated. Mary Ann joined the Women's Guild of St. Domitilla and sang in the church choir for many years.
Mary Ann's greatest passion was raising her children. She was extremely busy nurturing, diapering, feeding, making lunches, baking, doing laundry, sewing, getting everyone off to school, and in general making sure all of her children were safe and loved. The family eventually grew to include 32 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
As the children grew older, Mary Ann became more involved in her community. She was an avid gardener, and as Secretary of the Berkeley Civic and Garden Club, she broadened her talents to include flower arranging and beautifying her own yard by cultivating a variety of flowers and vegetables. She was a member of the Friends of the Berkeley Library and hosted frequent book sales.
Mary Ann left an impression on everyone who met her. She will be greatly missed by all. She is now at peace and her memory will live on for generations.
