Melvin Lee Hill Sr., affectionately known as 'Jake', was born on August 28, 1939 in Plum Branch, South Carolina to the late Edgar Lee Hill and Addie Ruth Wells Hill. Melvin was the 2nd oldest of 6 children. The family moved to Chicago when Melvin was 4 years old.
Melvin attended grade school at Jenner Scholastic Academy and went on to attend William H. Wells High School. He continued his education at Olive Harvey College and Washburn Trade School, where he perfected his skills in the plumbing industry. Melvin received Christ at an early age and attended St. Matthew United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School. On February 21, 1959, Melvin married the love of his life, Jamestine Ollie Patrick, and to this union three children were born, Melvin Lee Hill Jr., Laura Renee Davis, and Kimberlyn D. Hill. Melvin worked for the railroad during his high school years. He went on to work for the Chicago Housing Authority, where he retired as a dedicated employee after over 40 years.
