Obituary

Orlando Theodore Coryell, age 93, passed away on May 30, 2025. He was the oldest child of Orlando Fieber and Lillian Wesson Coryell. Born on June 11, 1931, he grew up during the Depression and World War II. At the age of 11, his father purchased a newspaper route for him. At that time, newspapers were delivered twice a day, and the newspaper boy collected the money for the papers once a week. He grew his paper route from 44 to 93 customers.

He attended Thomas Carr Howe High School for three years, graduating a year early in 1948 at the age of 16. He attended Purdue University for a year at the Indianapolis Campus. Orlando convinced the Purdue basketball coach to let him join the team during spring practices. This was the first of many ways he sold his skills.

Orlando moved to Chicago in February 1957 to work for the Federal Record Center. He made a career change in September to a printing sales organization, where he designed multi-part business forms, initiated a peg-board accounting system, and handled the house accounts. He started taking college courses at night at Northwestern University.

In 1960, he switched jobs to an insurance company where he began his computer career and continued taking night courses at Northwestern, DePaul, and Roosevelt Universities. After amassing the number of credits needed for a diploma, Orlando graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor's of Philosophy degree in 1964. He never matriculated as a full-time college student. He presented the credits required, and was awarded a degree—selling himself again.

He began his MBA program at the University of Chicago in the fall of 1964. He took night classes and taught at ITT once a week on top of his daytime job and growing family. Orlando was awarded an MBA in Spring 1967.

In 1964, he was the president of the Sunday Nighters at Bryn Mawr Community Church in South Shore. He made lifelong friends there and met his wife, Caroline (née Smith). Caroline had a young daughter, Jane Ellen Runions, whom Orlando embraced soon after their marriage on September 19, 1964. A year later, the family moved from South Shore to Evanston and added another daughter, Catherine Rebecca. During the 1971 Christmas season, Orlando and Caroline purchased a house in La Grange, IL, and moved into it in August 1972.

Orlando ran for president of the Village of LaGrange in 1973. He served as Treasurer in 1975 and as Chairman in 2009 and 2010 of the Caucasus. He supported Caroline's bid for the Library Board, where she served for 20 years.

He diligently cared for Caroline for several years before and after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Orlando was preceded in death by his parents, a baby brother, David Michael Coryell, his sisters Lillian Carol Coryell (the late William) Brown and Eleanor Joyce Coryell (the late Lars) Sandvik, his daughter Jane (the late Richard) Gassen, and his beloved wife, Caroline.

He is survived by his daughter, Catherine Rebecca (Jeffrey) Carney of Ephraim, UT; his two granddaughters, Virginia (Ken) Giles of Ft. Lupton, CO; and Deirdre (McKayla Vance) Carney of Tonawanda, NY, and his dear partner, Cynthia Hojnacki of Niles, IL. Orlando's nephews also survive him: Manfred Spencer of Tinley Park, IL, James (Linda) Spencer of Edwardsville, IL, and Tim (Peggy Young) Brown of the Bronx, NY. He is also survived by his cousins Myra Maxwell of Greenfield, IN, Nancy (Jerry) Reirdon, of Newburgh, IN, Debby (John) Brown of Wisconsin-Rapids, WI, Neal Coryell of Columbus, OH, Denise Larson of Wisconsin Rapids, WI, Kathryn (Buzz Wasson) of Shipshewana, IN, and many other family and friends.
